This summer, Charter Oak is happy to be able to offer a wide variety of FREE online camps and a special in-person TEEN recording workshop.

Summer 2021 Online Camps

All classes are FREE for all students and all supplies will be delivered to your home.
All classes will take place through the video chat service Zoom.

Apply by June 11, 2021. Rank your choices 1, 2, 3 in your application. Open to ages 6–18.

Online Summer Camp Schedule

Each camp will be a daily 90-minute sessions that runs for one week, Monday to Friday. Classes will be taught by Charter Oak’s staff of teaching artists, and will take place through the online video chat service Zoom. Zoom links to classes will be provided when registration is confirmed.

Our registration period ends on June 11, 2021. Families will be notified of their class placement between June 14th and June 21st. Please note, registration is not a guarantee of enrollment. To ensure the best possible online learning experience, class size will be limited, so most families will only be enrolled in one class.

MORNING CAMP 9:30-11:00 am  |  AFTERNOON CAMP 1:00-2:30 pm

June 28–July 2

MORNING: Piano & General Music (Beginner)
Learn the foundations of music while playing fun tunes on the piano. This camp is for children with little or no previous musical experience.

AFTERNOON: Hip Hop Dance
Learn the coolest moves in this high energy dance class.

July 5–July 9

MORNING: Theater
Gain confidence and express yourself as you learn to play different characters on stage.

AFTERNOON: Cartoon Drawing/Anime
Create your very own cartoons and learn to draw characters from your favorite anime.

July 12–July 16

MORNING: Creative Writing
 Young writers will explore their imaginations through poetry. short stories, and writing about their lives. For ages 8+

AFTERNOON: Crafts
 Enjoy working with your hands to create fun craft projects.

July 19–July 23

MORNING: Be a Friend Club
 In this special anti-bullying workshop, we’ll send letters and messages of support to kids struggling with bullies, learn how to build better friendships, and help end bullying! For ages 8+

AFTERNOON: Ballet
 Learn this elegant and graceful dance form.

July 26–July 30

MORNING: Yoga
Learn how to calm your mind, build strength, and improve flexibility as your enjoy this unique exercise form.

AFTERNOON: Crafts
Enjoy working with your hands to create fun craft projects.

August 2–August 6

MORNING: Cooking & Nutrition
Learn how to make delicious healthy meals and snacks.

AFTERNOON: Piano & General Music (Intermediate)
Learn the foundations of music while playing fun tunes on the piano. This camp is for children withsome previous musical experience.

August 9–August 13

MORNING: Hip Hop Dance
Learn the coolest moves in this high energy dance class.

AFTERNOON: Rap
Master rhythm and rhyme as you learn to perform your own rap songs. For ages 8+

Tapeworks Free Summer Recording Workshop for TEENS

This special workshop is FREE for all students and will take place in-person at Tapeworks Studio (770 Maple Ave in Hartford).

Registration ends on July 9th, 2021. Families will be notified of their class placement between July 12th. Please note, spots are limited, and registration is not a guarantee of enrollment.

Students will learn to create original music with professional recording equipment, working with electronic loops, digital audio workstations (DAWS), and music production software. They will get to record, edit, mix and master music in a commercial recording facility.

This workshop is being taught by nationally-known Producer/Engineer Bill Ahearn, as well as guest producers and speakers.

The workshop will take place in-person at Tapeworks Studio (770 Maple Ave in Hartford).

Sessions will run July 19th to July 23rd, 9:00AM to 12:00PM.

Open to students ages 13-18.

Youth Arts Institute… at home!

Spring 2021

All classes will be held online through the video chat service Zoom. Classes begin Monday, February 8th and end Thursday, May 20th. Classes are FREE for all students and all class supplies will be delivered to your home.

Due to class size restrictions, we regret that we cannot accept every student that registers. Charter Oak will notify all registrants at the end of January. Students enrolled into a Youth Arts Institute class will receive a notification with a Zoom class link upon acceptance.

Mondays

Hip Hop Dance (A)
4:30 to 5:30 PM
This high energy dance class is for all students ages 6 to 18.

Ukulele
5:30 to 6:30PM
Playing the ukulele is a fun and easy way to get started in music. Strum your way through the long winter! Ages 8 to 18.

Chess
6:30 to 7:30PM
Learn the exciting game of strategy and problem-solving. Ages 8 to 18.

Hartford All-City Youth Orchestra (HACYO)
6:30 to 7:30PM
This string ensemble is for students with at least one year of experience with a musical instrument. Students in middle or high school are encouraged to join. HACYO now includes semi-private lessons!

Tuesdays

Painting & Drawing
5:00 to 6:00PM
Learn different art techniques as you create beautiful pictures. Ages 6 to 18.

Vocal Ensemble
5:30 to 6:30PM
Sing your favorite tunes while learning vocal techniques. Ages 6 to 18.

Hip Hop Dance (B)
6:00 to 7:00PM
This high energy dance class is for all students, ages 6 to 18.

Wednesdays

Piano 1
4:30 to 5:30
This beginner piano class is for students ages 6 to 18. Instructors will place students in Piano 1 or 2 based on age and experience.

Piano 2
5:30 to 6:30PM
Piano 2 is for students ages 6 to 18 with intermediate piano skill. Instructors will place students in Piano 1 or 2 based on age and experience.

Recorder
6:30 to 7:30PM
The recorder is a fun wind instrument and a great start for kids who want to play the flute, clarinet, or saxophone someday! Ages 6 to 18.

Funky Community Brass Band
6:30 to 7:30PM
Taught by the nationally known Funky Dawgz Brass Band, this high energy New Orleans Style band is for students in middle and high school. At least one year of experience on a brass or woodwind instrument is necessary. Now includes semi-private lessons!

Thursdays

Ballet
4:30 to 5:30PM
This elegant and graceful dance class is for all students, ages 6 to 18.

Blanket Making
4:30 to 5:30PM
Stay warm this winter and make two cozy fleece blankets by cutting and tying provided fabric. Ages 6 – 18.

Crafts
5:30 to 6:30PM
Enjoy working with your hands to create fun craft projects. Ages 6 to 18.

Hartford Young Writers
5:30 to 6:30PM
This class provides inspiration for young writers as they explore their imaginations through poetry, short stories, and writing about their lives. Ages 8 to 12.

Word Up! Writing for Teens
6:30 to 7:30PM
A space for teen writers to be creative, share their voices, and express themselves through the written word. Ages 12-18.

Read It and Sleep
Fridays — 6:30PM
Our children’s literacy program moves online! Story time with guest readers and fun, guided crafts and activities.

Our free programming is designed to help those most in need and we therefore consider household income when we assess eligibility for our classes. We welcome families to apply. We will get back to you as soon as possible about the status of your application.
