ELISABETH MOSS – Artist Statement

Over the last forty years my painting has evolved into a path for making the sacred or prayer visible. Working primarily with water-based paint, often in combination with collage, the paintings emerge through a deep listening or “felt” conversation with the Unseen. In surrendering to the unknowable direction each creation will take, the canvas becomes an altar where a visual story unfolds. Imagery reveals itself from a place of felt accord and intuition. As I build each painting through color relationships, archetypal symbols, patterns, and relational elements, the accumulated layers reference life experiences and the mystery of the unknown. It is my intention that the paintings offer a dimension of harmony, silence and buoyancy that reflects the beauty in our humanity and divinity. And it is my hope that they offer healing and joyfulness, as we seek to build community and find meaning in our world.
