Romare Bearden, The Block

Opening Reception Thursday, May 8, 6-8 pm Romare Bearden’s seminal work, “The Block,” is a six-panel painting that depicts life in Harlem through its neighborhood buildings. As an acknowledgement of Bearden’s powerful work and community spirit and the recent 100th anniversary of his birth, we invited artists to create an artwork that celebrates their favorite block in Hartford. Guy Duguay was born in Dieppe, New Brunswick in 1955. Duguay, painter, artist, sculptor, potter, ceramist, engraver and graphic designer, died of AIDS in June 1996. He married fellow artist Louisa Barton Duguay who curates this show of her late husband’s work. Show runs May 20 through June 19.
