Romare Bearden, The Block

Opening Reception Thursday, May 8, 6-8 pm Romare Bearden’s seminal work, “The Block,” is a six-panel painting that depicts life in Harlem through its neighborhood buildings. As an acknowledgement of Bearden’s powerful work and community spirit and the recent 100th anniversary of his birth, we invited artists to create an artwork that celebrates their favorite block in Hartford. “Heartbreak Motels,” a new photographic collaboration between artists Joy Bush and Donna Masotti exploring the shifting landscape of the Berlin Turnpike, opens at Charter Oak Culture Center with a reception on November 12.
