Charter Oak Cultural Center & Jewish Plays Project present
HARTFORD JEWISH PLAYWRITING CONTEST 2021
Be a part of shaping contemporary Jewish Theatre with this fun, interactive event!
Every year, the Jewish Plays Project puts out a call for playwrights whose work speaks to the 21st century Jewish experience. After narrowing down the many submissions, ten plays are put forward for panels at nine regions around the country to select their three favorite. Earlier this year, Charter Oak convened a panel of volunteer readers to pick the Hartford Top 3 from among the 10 new works .
On Wednesday, March 18, we will present scenes from the three works that Hartford selected as the best of the best. This fun, interactive event will allow YOU to vote for your favorite. The winners from each of the 9 regions around the country will vie to receive a full developmental production in New York City.
Hartford’s Top Three Plays:
LEO AT YESHIVA by Emma Horwitz
A new play about a delousing salon in Park Slope owned by an Orthodox Jewish family, and three women who are ferociously feeding their hairiest dreams while swimming in tubs of Pantene.
PART by Mariel Eve Berlin-Fischler
A past betrayal plunges a family into fresh panic with the arrival of an unexpected text message, minutes before Shabbat. As the clock ticks toward the Sunday wedding of her only daughter, a mother is forced to choose between family connection and family protection in the light of a long-buried secret.
THE WRONG QUESTION by EllaRose Chary
Lita (white, queer, not religious) and Vashti (black, straight, practicing) are best friends, organizing for progressive change at the Jewish Values Justice League. When a series of anti-Semitic incidents happen at a wealthy, predominately white, Ashkenazi, Jewish community center and synagogue in a gentrifying low-income black neighborhood, Lita and Vashti learn things about themselves and each other that change their friendship forever.
